Interview: Becoming Independent


Studies have repeatedly shown that divorce and separation are the second and third most stressful events in a persons life. Only the death of a spouse is more immediately stressful. Studies have also shown that the stress of separation and divorce negatively impacts men at least as much as woman.

Biological links between emotional stress, such as that caused by separation and divorce, and the development of physical illness have been found. So have links between divorce and separation and a negative impact on mental health.

Thus, one aspect of becoming independent is to deal with the stress and emotional impact of separation and divorce. By doing so you can promote good health. With good health you will better be able to meet the challenges associated with beginning an independent life.

Studies have shown that that lack of friends or social contacts is associated with anxiety and depression among the separated and divorced individuals.
